In the wake of Bill 5, Ford’s water grabbing agenda is becoming more clear and it includes gutting Ontario water-taking regulations. The Ontario government is proposing a radical change to the way water-taking is permitted in Ontario. At first, we thought it was just to enable Ice River to keep bottling at the Nestlé/Blue Triton plant.
Now, we understand it could create a water-taking systems that operates without scrutiny, without environment assessment, without public comment, and without duty to consult Indigenous nations.
This sweeping change would apply to any permits to take water, including:
- Water bottling
- Mining & exploration
- Aggregate pits
- Industrial operations
This problem is bigger than we thought.
