Aquifers Under Siege - What Happens when the Wells Run Dry ?
Maude will be coming to speak especially to the citizens of Wellington County, Guelph, and Guelph-Eramosa Township, now ‘groundsource zero’ in the looming water crisis posed by water taking in the Guelph-Wellington area.
It is largely believed that the wells in the Guelph area will never run dry. Even if we believe that the water quantity is not threatened, the disturbing fact is, given the increasing demands put upon the aquifer, the quality of water necessary for drinking and sustaining life could easily be at risk.
The aquifer which feeds the water supply for this area is under siege. It’s unique and special qualities have not escaped the attention of corporations who want to use our drinking water for profit. Nestlé, and more recently Xinyi Glass, have welcomed themselves (or tried) to this area to help themselves to free resources.
Maude Barlow is: the Honorary Chairperson of the Council of Canadians and chairs the board of Washington-based Food and Water Watch. She is a Councillor with the Hamburg-based World Future Council. Maude is the recipient of fourteen honorary doctorates and many awards, including the 2005 Right Livelihood Award (known as the “Alternative Nobel”). She is also the author of dozens of reports, and 18 books, including her latest, Blue Future: Protecting Water For People And The Planet Forever and Boiling Point, Government Neglect, Corporate Abuse and Canada’s Water Crisis.
