Join us for a 90-minute webinar where we’ll explore North America’s most precious fresh water resource and the looming threats from Big Oil and the perilous Line 5 oil pipeline.

Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario make up the Great Lakes and span more than 750 miles from west to east. They hold 84% of North America’s surface freshwater and about 21% of the world’s total surface freshwater and provide drinking water to more than 40 million people. Shared by sovereign Indigenous Nations, these vast freshwater lakes hold profound spiritual and cultural significance for Indigenous peoples and support critical ecosystems for numerous species. They also provide the economic backbone of the region, supporting tourism, shipping, fishing, and related industries. Yet the future of our Great Lakes is at risk — beneath the surface lies North America’s most hazardous oil and gas pipeline. The question is no longer if it will rupture, but when.

You’ll hear from Whitney Gravelle (President, Bay Mills Indian Community), Debbie Chizewer (Managing Attorney at Earthjustice), Jeff Insko (Author & Professor, Oakland University), Sean McBrearty (Michigan State Director, Clean Water Action) and Dani Lindamood (Campaigns & Communications Director, Water Watchers Canada). Together they’ll share knowledge, experiences, and strategies in the fight to shut down Line 5 and safeguard our freshwater. We’ll dive into the impacts communities face in both the U.S and Canada – from the Bad River Band’s fight to remove Line 5 from their land in Wisconsin, to the risky tunnel proposed beneath Michigan’s Straits of Mackinac, where an oil spill would endanger all the Great Lakes.

Come ready to ask questions and take action on this crucial, international issue.

There will be a brief Q&A session at the end of the presentation, followed by an opportunity to take action!

This webinar is brought to you in partnership with: Clean Water Action, Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities, Michigan Climate Action Network, National Wildlife Federation, Oil & Water Don’t Mix, Progress Michigan, Sierra Club Canada, Sierra Club Michigan, Sierra Club Wisconsin, and Water Watchers.
