Ontario freshwater ecosystems and drinking water sources are facing growing, dangerous, and chronic salt pollution. Ontario is Canada’s #1 user of winter salt, dumping approximately 2-3 million tonnes of salt each year.
Join us to learn about salt pollution, connect with experts on the challenges and opportunities associated with addressing salt pollution, and hear how to get involved in the solutions.

Panelist Bios:
Julie Wright
Julie is a city councillor in Waterloo, Ontario and the National Director of Our Living Waters, a Canada-wide network that unites Canadian water leaders towards “all waters in good health by 2030.” Previously, she led Partners for Action, a research initiative at the University of Waterloo that focuses on flood risk and resilience, and for a decade prior, she ran the Waterloo Global Science Initiative (WGSI), a global summit series that tackled decarbonization and energy access, sustainable development, and education for the 21st Century. Her early career included 10 years in communications and public affairs work for clients at the forefront of sector disruption.
Dr. Shelley Arnott
Dr. Shelley Arnott is an aquatic ecologist at Queen’s University whose research spans fundamental to applied outcomes. She uses field and laboratory experiments, as well as lake surveys and analyses of long-term data to assess plankton responses to human-induced environmental change, with a major focus on understanding multiple stressor interactions. She collaborates extensively with government, academic, and NGO scientists and recently led two global initiatives to examine variation in impact of freshwater salinization on zooplankton. Her research on freshwater salinization has revealed that currently water quality guidelines do not protect all lakes, especially softwater lakes on the Canadian Shield. She recently was awarded the Frank H. Rigler Award for her achievements in the field of limnology.
Lee Gould
Lee Gould is the Executive Director of the Smart About Salt Council, a not-for-profit dedicated to addressing negative impacts of poor winter maintenance practices on freshwater resources while also promoting safety through best management practices.
Dani Lindamood
Dani Lindamood is a community activator, campaigner, and creative based in the Great Lakes basin. With a Masters exploring water sustainability and access, as well as a decade of academic, NGO, and creative experience researching and protecting water, Dani is honoured that water is the connective thread of her career. In these challenging times, she believes the unifying lens of water will help pave the way to a future that supports and honours all life. Dani is the Campaigns & Communications Director of Water Watchers and is also the lead organizer of the Ontario Salt Pollution Coalition, a working group of individuals and organizations seeking provincial action to address the salt pollution of Ontario waters.
