Background:

The Blue Communities Project was launched in 2009 as a joint initiative of the Council of Canadians, the Blue Planet Project, and the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

Maude Barlow was the driving energy behind the concept of Blue Communities as a critical step in linking the issue of water commodification, water privatization and the human right to water. Join us for this ‘lunch and learn’ style virtual event to hear from Maude about her inspiration for the concept of Blue Communities and why it is increasingly important now in the global water landscape.

As part of the global water justice movement Water Watchers are learning that bottled and packaged water is central to the global process of water commodification and is a key impediment to realizing the human right to water, not to mention a major environmental threat.

So….. we became a Blue Community and want to inspire others to invite your school, church group, workspace, organization to become a Blue Community as well!

Water Watchers commits to the Blue Communities Project by pledging to adopt a water commons framework by:

  1. Recognizing water and sanitation as human rights.
  2. Banning or phasing out the sale of bottled water in municipal facilities and at municipal events.
  3. Promoting publicly financed, owned and operated water and wastewater services
