Nga Zhichige Nibi Onji — I will do it for the water.
The Grand River Water Walk is based on the teachings of Josephine-Baa Mandamin, who walked around all of the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence River before passing into the spirit world in 2019. With a copper pail of water in one hand and an eagle staff in another, she brought worldwide recognition to the value of water. Her legacy continues to guide us. We walk to honour Nibi (water), we speak, sing and pray to her spirit, and we offer petitions for healthy rivers, lakes and oceans for future generations.
Support or Join the Walk
We are grateful for donations of food, snacks, and water along the route. Please reach out to [email protected] to contribute in this way.
We also invite people to join the All Nations Grand River Water Walk as a community walker for a few hours, a day, or more. Please read the All Nations Grand River Water Walk Protocols on our website before joining the Water Walk.
Mary Anne is inviting interested community walkers for a Zoom meeting on September 8 (7:00 to 8:00 pm) to learn more. Email [email protected] if you would like to receive the Zoom link.
Follow the Walk
The 2025 Grand River Water Walk will begin at the source in Dundalk and continue to where the river empties into Lake Erie. People from all Nations are welcome to walk, sing, and pray for Nibi (the water).
Please review our protocols ahead of time. Once you arrive, report to the Grandmother Van to smudge, offer tobacco, and receive further instructions. You will need to bring your own snacks, drinking water, and lunch.
Our walk begins each morning before 4:00 a.m. The Scout will be posting each day's route on Facebook. If you would like to join us, check Spot GPS — the walkers' location will be updated every 10 minutes.
